The School

Dover College was founded in 1871, although there has been a centre of learning on the site for 800 years, and the school's current Patron is Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. The College is set in the private grounds of the ancient Priory of St. Martin, and all its buildings are ranged about the Priory Close. Although the ancient monastic buildings are still in use - the Priory Gatehouse is now the VIth Form Study Centre - Dover College is very much a modern school, overlooked by Dover Castle and the lighthouse. The teaching buildings occupy an elevated site behind the main school and boarding houses. The school grounds encompass playing fields and a modern, well-equipped sports hall, and the College also has a strong sailing tradition.
