The School

Founded in 1858, agreeably sited on the outskirts of Bristol near the Downs and in spacious grounds. The style of the school is a combination of discipline and warmth. Girls are encouraged to become thinking, caring and independent young women.

Staff-pupil relationships are mature and friendly, based on principles of courtesy and mutual respect. Alll pupils are encouraged to work hard and play hard; the all-rounder is encouraged. It has a reputation for good teaching and a distinguished academic record; examination results are excellent.

There is a new sixth-form centre and sixth formers are treated as students. It is very good on the creative arts and music is particularly strong.

Good range of clubs and activities and it participates in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme. A good range of sports and extra-curricular activities.

Key Stage 3
Year 7, 8 and 9
Years 7, 8 and 9 follow a broad curriculum which ensures there is continuity and progression and yet has sufficient flexibility to respond to individual needs and interests. Subjects studied are: English Language and Literature, Drama, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Food and Nutrition, French, German or Spanish, Latin or Classical Civilisation, History, Geography, Religious Studies, ICT, Music, Creative Arts (painting, drawing, textiles, ceramics, jewellery, metalwork, 3D sculpture), PE and Games.
Key Stage 4
Years 10 and 11
For GCSE girls usually take 8, 9 or 10 subjects. English Language and Literature, Maths, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and short courses in RE and IT are compulsory. All girls have timetabled PE and Games.
Years 12 and 13

Subjects available: Art and Design, Biology, Chemistry, Economics, English, Geography, Government and Politics, History, History of Art, Home Economics, Latin, Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Statistics, Modern Languages, Music and Music Technology, Photography, Physics, Religious Studies and Philosophy, Theatre.

Special Features

There is a lot of emphasis on Europe and the wider world with participation, for example, in the Model United Nations and European Youth Parliament. Full advantage is taken of the facilities of the city and Bristol University.

Accommodation

Sixth form in single study bedrooms in sixth-form centre. Years 7 – 10 share, Year 11 single or shred dorms with study facilities.
